Tips and Advice for Obtaining Car Insurance for Younger Drivers
Turning 16 and having the ability to drive a car on your own is a rite of passage for millions of teenagers every year. It is also a source of great anxiety for many of their parents. Securing quality car insurance for young drivers is an absolute necessity. While the most unstable and inexperienced drivers are in fact teenagers, protection must be secured in the form of automobile insurance so that any and all incidents and accidents that may arise are hopefully, covered.
If you are the parent or guardian of a teenager then you are probably aware of the fact that automobile insurance for teens can be quite expensive. It is of course, for good reason. An automobile consists of a couple of tons of steel and glass that is capable of going in excess of 100 mph. With that visual in your mind it is not hard to imagine all the things that can go wrong. That is why car insurance for young drivers is absolutely essential.
With that said it seems as if insurance premiums are equally as scary. They continue to go higher and higher for not only teenage drivers, but also for experienced adults who have shown that they are responsible behind the wheel. While your teen is learning to drive under a learner’s permit using your automobile they are covered by your insurance company as long as they follow the rules of the road and drive responsibly.
With that said however, make sure that you contact your insurance company and explain to them that you have a teenager that is just beginning to drive and that they will be driving your car. When they do in fact get their drivers license the insurance company will require that they too be added to your policy. The last thing you want to do is try to be clever and just allow them to drive your car hoping that they are automatically covered. That can be an expensive mistake.
You of course, are going to want to take a look at the premiums you pay. Your premiums are based on your deductible and has an inverse relationship. The higher your deductible the lower your premium will be and vice versa. Be careful with this too.
Conversely, if your deductible is too low then you will be paying exorbitant insurance rates. Conversely, if your deductible is too high you are going to be paying a lot of money out of pocket if you should happen to make a claim on your policy. It is a balancing act that you are going to have to decide what you are most comfortable with.
You can pick up some discounts on car insurance for young drivers. The completion of drivers education classes may qualify for savings. You’ll have to check with your insurance company to see exactly what their policy is in regard to offering discounts. We of course also urge you to shop around.
The insurance company that you have grown comfortable with may not offer the best rates and coverages available. Shopping for the best deals on auto insurance should be something that you do on a semi regular basis. You could end up saving hundreds of dollars a year on your insurance bills.
